Like just about anyone that does woodworking, I have drawers full of screws. Once I ran across GRKs, all of the others ended up getting tossed into a junk drawer (I know I'll never use them again, but I can't bring myself to throw them away). I tend to buy the GRK brand screws in multiple sizes, and in large quantities because of how ridiculously GOOD they are. When they say that they won't strip, they're right; they won't. Unlike practically every other brand I've bought where I can strip the head by hand using just a screw driver, once you have the driver in one of these it's like you've temporarily welded the screw to the driver; that's how much torque it can handle.In addition, GRKs tend to have a lot of pull strength. This can be an issue when you're using an electric drill without a clutch as the V-head screw will simply keep pulling through the wood, leaving a hole behind it. If you like to bury your screws in the wood, but don't want to drill countersunk holes, then as long as your wood doesn't split these are the screws for you! Cap heads like this particular structural screw don't have this problem, they just stop rotating.So what are the downsides?First, for the larger screws (like these), you need a larger electric drill; I came close to burning out the motor on my drill because it was the weak link (these screws don't strip or break, remember?).Second, you MUST remember that your drill AND YOUR WRIST are weaker than the screw. I've gotten impatient and screwed these into 6x6 lumber as fast as my drill could turn. When the cap hit the surface of the lumber, it stopped turning, but my drill wanted to keep going, yanking my wrist something awful. SLOW DOWN when you get close!Finally, the one thing that has irritated me no end is that not all GRK distributors carry all of their sizes. There are sizes that GRK produces that you can't find on Amazon, no matter how hard you search. If you find a distributor that carries ALL of the sizes, let me know! GRK themselves don't sell retail, and I don't buy enough to qualify to buy from them directly as a retailer.
We built outside steps along the side of our house using railroad ties as the frame and these long screws to hold them together tightly. It worked well and is very solid.
Excellant replacement for lag screws. I will be using these from now on instead of buying the more expensive lags from the big box stores. These drove in no problem without pre drilling a hole with no splitting.
I am now using this lag bolt in construction of wheel-chair ramps. It requires a good bit of torque, but does not require a pilot hole. It saves us time and work to use these joining 2x4 and 2x6 lumber. We use the nick-name "super-screw" to designate these in our work. AND THEY ARE!!
Just built 200' of fence. Used these to bolt the 4x4 posts to existing steel post in the ground. Worked awesomely. Not a single cam out - even with 2000 in/lb of impact driver force. Rock solid. Will use these from now on anywhere i used to use a lag bolt.
I tend to suffer from pride in doing things the hard way, so I was hesitant to give up using lag screws -- with their time consuming ritual of pilot holes and need for high torque impact drivers -- for these structural screws which claimed to be so easy to use that it seemed like cheating to me. But I was working on a project that needed to be done fast, so I decided to buy a pack of these GRK structural screws. Before I even drove the first screw, I could not help but marvel at it. This is a very slick fastener. It drives easily and makes a very strong and stiff connection. It also looks better than a lag screw, in my opinion. I am proud to use these and doubt I will consider using lag screws ever again.
These are fantastic. Drive with a third the torque of lag bolts and without a pilot hole. Bite the wood exceptionall well. Incredibly strong. Worth even more than the high price.
I bought these at HD and paid more, so I thought I'd buy them here to save a few $$. I used these screws on landscape timbers and these are by far superior to any screw or nail you care to use. They drive into a timber like butter using a cordless drill and are the perfect length. I have not had one shear off yet, they are super strong. The package says Uber and I believe it!!
Awesome holding power for building outside structures. Sharp point drills its own pilot hole. Smooth shank allows boards to be pulled together. Great holding power even when driven into end grain.
I used these for fastening landscape timbers together to make flower bed borders. They drive easily (for a large screw) with no drilling and no splitting. I drove about 50 with one battery charge on a Ryobi 18v drill and had plenty charge left over.
Extending our deck. I wish I had come across the GRK RSS line earlier. Works kind of as advertised. Working with standard pine and pressure treated lumber.These 5-1/8 inch screws where purchased in addition to a GRK RSS10318-5 RSS ProPak 10 by 3-1/8-Inch Structural Screws, 236 Screws per Pail pail of 3-1/8 inch screws for when driving into thicker materials.My advice is to make sure that your materials are positioned as you intend and clamp if needed. These screws will hold whatever they are driven into, but your drill may not be powerful enough to have the screw draw the materials together quite as well as portrayed in the product videos available out there. Because these screws are so long I had to walk them in all the way by backing them out a few times along the way until they seated completely.Also, these screws are not impervious to cam out, BUT I have not completely reamed out one yet.Overall, I would say these screws are an exceptional valve and outperform other structural attachment alternatives such as lag bolts in my experience.
