I used these for grout and the bags would keep breaking. Our of the 10 bags I used for a project, more than half of them split on a seam while using and made a huge mess.

Everything is great about these except that they are too small for mortar repointing in my opinion. I'd prefer to have about 25-35% more mortar to start a bag with. And what's worse for me, is that even with the reduced mortar volume I place in the bag, I still haven't left myself enough of the end length of the bag to twist closed securely. The result is that, 1- I'm more worried about pinching the end of the bag together than I should be while repointing, and 2- some mortar will squeeze out the end, getting my hand messy, and occasionally dropping mortar. While I need to fill a bit less to avoid this, I'm already using a smaller mortar volume, --which is frustrating for several reasons when prioritizing timing of the mortar repointing processes. I might be using a bit more mortar than other repointers because of how I prep the joints, but anyway-- I'm switching to bigger bags because of this.

We used to use the canvas bags until I saw these and decided to try them out because my employees kept on misusing them and it can get expensive. They didn’t know they went inside the other ones and used alone. Well, they loved them and now they won’t use anything but these.

First off, these may not be a direct replacement for canvas bags depending on how you're using them. They are, however, very useful for most situations, they are easy to squeeze and actually take much less effort then canvas bags and do to the slick nature of plastic the mortar flows much more smoothly. More importantly for a business owner that means they are faster.The downsides are pretty obvious, they are plastic. Keep them in the box until use, or some tool will puncture them. If you get a rock in the bag it must be emptied if you try to tap it with your trowel it will split the tip. Even with that being said, they are pretty durable. They can be rinsed out and re-used but at 48 cents per bag I usually don't.They are a little smaller then the canvas bags, but to be honest, if you're filling up a canvas bag to the max, you haven't been trained properly and are doing it really, really wrong.
