Looked forward to using this tool but disappointed that it sliced through the aluminum downspout when making a crimp. The blades are too sharp and should be blunt.
I spent a good hour trying to fit downspouts together the way people suggested on youtube using a needle nose pliers and ended up screaming obscenities. "There has to be a tool for this". I looked at some cheaper units but saw the review that compared this tool to theirs. I chose this tool. I have just spent the day putting together a somewhat complicated system of downspouts from canales, (I live in Santa Fe). My goodness, I never thought I would be writing a review about how much fun (comparatively) it was to work with tool. Don't hesitate. If you're going to be working with downspouts get this tool. You won't regret it. Hopefully you can bypass the hour or so of obscenities!
As some have said this device did a small amount of breaking on a couple joints. I do not think the issue is totally the fault of this crimper, but the thin downspout. I higy recommend this product
Found I had to jam the end of the downspout in fully to avoid cutting the aluminum at the end if the crimp rocess ess, like a shear. Also, old gutters used thicker metal gauge and were less likely to cut.
They are decent, but would have expected better from Malco. The crimping part should be longer and multiple attempts must be made or you can easily cut through aluminum downspouts. I used them on heavy gauge aluminum downspouts and first use they cut right through the aluminum.
These are great! Wish I had gotten these sooner, I ended up redoing all of my downspout work with these because I was just using pliers before and ended up with leaks everywhere. I started over and used these. The downspouts fit with each other so much better and no leaks or jagged edges. Practice on a scrap piece first, use gentle pressure to start and go over the same area a few times to make the crimp longer or deeper. The key is to be gentle so you don't cut the metal.
This tool is not designed for use on thin aluminum downspouts sold at the big box stores: The middle blade cuts clean through the metal. The tool is designed for thicker gauge sheet metal used for HVAC but not downspouts. Buyer beware.
Joining downspout sections can be a real pain, unless you have the right tools. This handy crimper makes joining un-crimped ends a snap. Just crimp the four corners of one end and slide it into the next downspout section. A very sturdy tool you'll keep for years.
The one I received makes one crimp and one cut on an aluminum downspout. If you apply a smaller amount of pressure you don't get a cut but you don't get a crimp either. No in-between pressure would result in a compromise.Maybe I just got a lemon.I returned it and bought a single-crimp instead (three blades) that works fine.
For years I avoided spending the money for a tool like this that I would only need a few times for each different house that we own. I used needle nose pliers to crimp the upstream section of downspout, and it always ended up being a mangle job. It was an embarrassment, but I covered it up with the next section downstream. When I needed to make a new downspout this time, I compared the purchase price of this tool to what it would cost to hire a handyman to do the job. That made the tool look very affordable. This tool works like a dream! It makes neat, beautiful crimps at each corner of your downspout section. Just be careful not to squeeze too hard, because I think it would be possible to cut all the way through the aluminum. I recommend this tool.
I spent hours trying to form my downspouts with pliers and cutters and making a mess. I started over with this crimper and had perfect connections in minutes.
I'd spent many frustrating and grossly inefficient minutes trying to crimp metal rain downspouts so's to fit the ends of pipes into the next sections. Finally looked for this tool. I will never recoup the cost, but the pleasure of finally using a perfect tool offset that. One brief crimp in each of a rectangular metal pipe's 4 corners and a pipe section then easily fits in to a next section. If you have a lot of downspout pipe to install or replace, DO get this tool first. Great engineering!
Worked well for a downspout project, much faster and cleaner than trying to crimp with needle nose pliers. But be careful not to over-crimp, as the jaws can cut all the way through the thin aluminum of the downspout.
