The pivot pin will move if not tight enough and if you over tighten the pin will shear off. The concept is there but I think if a rubber washer was used for traction this would be a home run. I called Malco customer service and she know the replacement part number off the top of her head which is HC1B know as a pivot pin.
Love these things. Do HVAC duct work installations, predominately metal duct work. Used many of them borrowed from co-workers. Bought this because we needed another. First hole worked beautifully. Then... the second hole and third weren't so, well round. The set screw slid from where I set it, locked it tight, but the paint caused it to slide out of place. Then when I tightened it more, the center pin broke. No worries had a backup. But the paint makes it slip from the setting, suggest scrape the paint off where the pin slides, just either side of the pin set. I'd go the entire length that way when you need to set for multiple holes, you won't have it slip on you.
While the general idea seems simple, the product packaging and instructions never actually show you or tell you how to use it. The packaging only shows it without a drill attached, as if it works magically without one. There is no indication of what type of drill is needed, what speed to use, etc.
Most worthless tool ever bought. Good concept but doesn’t work. Size marker slides down the scale and spoils thr hole. If you try to tighten it a bit harder, you brake it. My friend got the same problem with his tool.
Bought this this a little over a month ago and found one "Used-Good" condition and decided to save few bucks. You ever hear "buy nice or buy twice"? Well I haven't learned that yet.... the one I received is broken and of course I'm 2 days past the return window....its not the money...just the fact that it ruined a rare day off to work on my project.
Works perfectly for making your duct openings.saves a a whole bunch of time just be careful with the drill bit because it’s delicate so always have an extra
Love it , Working in HVAC as Installer .This is one tool that is a must have in the Industry.Love this tool cutting perfect size holes In metal plenum ...
I really do hate to see a great tool get a bad rep. I have used Malco and Klein tools for over 20 years. This hole cutter especially. It cuts my job time down to more than half when cutting holes in plenums and trunk lines. Especially if you are on the bottom floor working off a ladder between joist and flooring. Just be sure to wear eye protection and long sleeves. The metal shards coming off are somewhat hot. I have read some of the reviews and seen some of the images posted here. This is why I am posting an image of a thickness gauge. Some of the images posted look to be much thicker than even 20 gauge steel. It is not designed for that thickness.
Using this to cut above your head will spit hot burning metal write it to your face, also I found that you have to use a lot of elbow grease to get it to cut
Needed hole cutter to replace the plenum. It did the job, but the wing nut to lock the hole size is not very well designed. It will slip if you use your hand to tighten it. I had to use a plier to make sure it is secure.
HORRIBLE experience using this. The first time I used this the center bolt pin I had tightened as hard as i could with a wrench came loose, causing it to shift while I was turning it and carving a slash that veered off course. I tried tightening the middle pin a second time. I finally got it to stay but it took quite a bit of effort.Undaunted even after ruining the metal I try cutting into it again from a different spot. It drills through quick enough BUT then of course it doesn't move when I turn it. It just drills in the same hole no matter how much pressure I use to turn it.What the heck?I reassemble the drill and cutter using the picture shown but the instructions are about as vague and helpful as "drill hole. Put center pin in hole. Assemble drill. Turn in clockwise motion". I'm not asking for a guide pamphlet with a trouble shooting guide or tips (like most good tools come with) but for an 80 dollar tool you would think they could you a couple paragraphs of info.Putting that aside - I set the drill bit into of a different piece of metal and lightly twist the tool to at least carve a groove circle I can run over with a jigsaw. This works ok, but my frequent attempts to drill through it and gouge a deeper trail fail. So at least I have a groove goingBut wait, it gets betterWhen you turn the handle even lightly the end of it makes scratches in the metal that are out of the orbit of the circle your trying to make. The metal I was trying to cut was the side panel of a pc case, which is painted steel BUT before you assume it was to thick or strong let me tell you I spent more then an hour learning about the strength of steel vs galvanized steel and because the pc panel was thin it equals out to about the max cutting gauge listed on the site. If you still think I'm wrong, remember that It cut through just fine at the start, albeit off course, as seen in the picture of the oddly angled gouge.BOTTOM LINEEven if it worked I wouldn't recommend this product for the scratches it makes, but if it works for you and you don't care about what your cutting then go for it.Unfortunately for me I won't be getting a refund for the 70 dollar pc case it ruined
Must have for anyone doing duct work. I thought having the larger 2-20 hole cutter would cover all my bases but I found that the HC2 doesn't do smaller holes as good as the HC1, which does 2-12 inch holes. Pro tip: point the tip towards your cut and things go much easier.
This tool is the ticket. I have been doing maintenance work for some 40 years now and in my "favorite tool" box this is kept. I took on project of replacement and upgrade of my home HVAC duct system and without this I would have had many stiches from sheet metal snips. If you work with duct work and you like professonal results get one of these. Great tool!!
Anyone who has tried to cut duct work with snips will really find this tool wonderful. Makes new and rework an easy process. Easily set to size and easy to use with any drill I had it on.
