I have a 7/8" J-cutter that is about 20 years old. love it but needed a 1" cutterI like the new lock mechanism and the etched gauge is nice but my oldie has an adjustable stop that was nice so I didnt have to even look at the cutter when working my miters.overall its made well and functions great.
I should have read the reviews before buying or at least tried these before the return window closed. As many others have mentioned these are too wide to work on standard 3/4" J channel, and now I'm out 50 bucks on a tool I will never use.
Product description is totally wrong.Advertised as 3/4” but actually 1” across.Of course we can return it and exchange but why waste everybody’s time and resources.Do Malco not even know what they are selling under this description?
These are very well built, easy to lock, easy to use. My only real issue is that the notches on the unit are not marked, as one might expect to make the correct cut depths desired. I located the notch mark I wanted using trial and error, and then colored it in with a Sharpie.I understand that there are variations of vinyl formulations and quality and that the tool needs to work with all permutations to be a success. If your J channel is breaking the tab completely out or putting stress cracks between the end of the cutting end points when you are attempting to just notch the J channel like me, here is how I solved it.Insert the tool into the J channel to the depth you want, slightly clamp down on the J channel, release the vinyl from your hands so the vinyls weight is only held by the tool. Squeeze the handles until it completes the first notching action. This seemed to be the only way I could get it operate for me. I was using 3/4 J channel from Certainteed. When the tool works, it saves you a lot of hassle trying to make clean cut or notch in of J channel with snips.
I had the same problem as everyone else .... why would I pay top dollar for a too that states it’s for 3/4 “ “J” channel only to get it and find it is made for larger trim .... the Malcolm tools I have bought are excellent quality ... too bad their product description is so useless .... $ 48.00 waste of money.... very poor description!!!!!!
1” is how wide the bottom of 3/4 j channel is and 3/4 is how wide the bottom of 5/8 j is. It’s not the cutters are wrong it’s that everyone Is measuring the j in the wrong spot. Read the back of the j or measure it in the right spot. You Have to measure where the hem is. Not the base.
I read some reviews prior to purchasing and thought they may be in accurate. Although it says for 3/4 J trim, it does measure 15/16" and is extremely difficult to make it work in my 3/4" J trim.It does cut very nicely, and very tight, but definately not like the videos i watched on linePerhaps the 5/8" cutters would be a better choice, especially if they are a bit larger than these ones as well.
Why doesn't this company hire a real ad person to put their ads together. These tools only work on j-channel they are made for. I wanted 3/4" cutter and yet in all of the ads for this brand product not a single one of them tells you what size channel it is made for. Since this product number has 75 in it I ordered it.
Bought these in winter. Just discovered they are not for cuttin j as discribed but for trimming drip cap for j to fit into. Big loss of cash fir something so misleading.
Not being a siding expert, I assumed that 3/4 of inch must be for 3/4 inch j channel. This item at least the one they sent me measures a full one inch. All of this is a bit misleading, the j cutter was marked JCC75R but does measure out to be 1 inch, I have ordered a 5/8 model to see if that works. I am sure the tool deserves a 5 star but the description deserves only 1, again it is misleading at least for us laymen.
Only because the description leaves a bit to be desired. For 3/4 inch one needs the 5/8 tool. However I returned it to Amazon for full credit and purchased the correct one.
If you are looking into buying a J-Cutter for the first time just click the buy now and you can thank me later. Malco is THE well-respected brand in our industry for siding hand tools.
I wasn't sure what size cutter to get (first time sider) so I measured the j channel I'm going to use. It is exactly 3/4" inside the channel from side wall to side wall. When I tried to insert it into the j channel I discovered the cutter was too wide. There is nothing wrong with it and I'm sure it would work well. I ordered the same thing but 5/8" wide.
