This is the perfect all-around 1/2” ratchet. If you don’t have a huge arsenal of tools, and you need a 1/2” ratchet that can handle a wide spectrum of tasks, this is your ticket. This is ideal for the larger hardware - brake mounting bolts, ball joints, body mounting bolts, engine mounts, control arms, pulley bolts, manifold bolts, etc.It’s not exactly a breaker bar, but the mechanism is really stout and it’s long handle will easily convince those rusty nuts to submit to your will.There’s also something to be said about the value for your money. An American made, life-long tool for well under $100? I’ll take two, please.Pro tip: take the head apart and grease the mechanism - it really smooths this thing out and makes it a pleasure to use.

Im a Millwright apprentice , Used this for 1 whole day then 2 hours in to my next work day the gears are locking up. Definitely learned my lesson and will be paying the extra $50 or so for quality tools, was trying to save money because of just starting but it is not worth the hassle. I'm disappointed in how quickly this tool broke ive had harbor freight ratchets last longer. Have been unable to warranty it. At price point id say avoid it.

Proto tools are classic well built tools. Bought this to be used as somewhat of a breaker bar with sockets and crows foot adapters. It doesn’t have a lot of teeth so its not meant for tight spaces where you would need a high tooth count. I feel that the less teeth it has the bigger the teeth are which would be stronger for use as a “breaker bar”. Even if I somehow break the gears you can buy a rebuild kit. Would definitely buy again

Being one of the only black ratchets I could find anywhere this big, I'm quite satisfied. The black oxide finish looks way better than chrome and so far it's gotten the job done. Only reason I didn't give 5 stars is because I really wish it had more teeth, that would make it perfect.

As many I prefer to fix my cars on my own. It does require a certain number of tools: wrenches, ratchets, braking bars etc. This one can be used as a breaker bar, at least, it is what I use it for. It is bulky, seems to be well made and durable. It is more expensive than other brands, I hope, it is due to higher quality and fair pay to Proto workers who made it.I believe, I got a reliable tool that will last for a long time and my purchase helps to contribute to the pay of the US manufacturing work force.

Let’s be honest. This is not going to turn any heads, or impress anyone with the fit and finish. The reverse switch didn’t even snap into place out of the package, but after a few cycles and some lube it has come around. But WOW. Proto makes the beefiest 1/2” ratcheting breaker bar I’ve ever put hands on. This thing is a tank. No doubt this will be in my collection for life. Love the fact that they make a refresh kit for it too.

Do be aware that this is a coarse ratchet, so takes a wider swing to reset for the next pull, but works very well. 150 lb-ft lug nuts are easy with the extended handle length. Just ordered the Premium model of this for finer gearing. And they are rebuildable!
